National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1945, as the oldest symphony orchestra in Taiwan. At the beginning, the Orchestra was once subordinate to Taiwan Garrison Headquarters, Taiwan Art Establishment Association, Department of Education, Taiwan and Office of Culture, etc. Since the establishment, outstanding domestic and international musicians have been invited to perform and the Orchestra has set many ¡§premieres in Taiwan:¡¨ premiere of Beethoven¡¦s Symphony No. 9 ¡§Choral¡¨ in an exceptionally grand occasion on 25 October 1948, publication of the earliest music biweekly, Musicology, first foreign guest conductor, Dr. Thor Johnson (U.S.), the first orchestra giving tour performances in Taiwan. In July 1999, the Orchestra was subordinate to Council for Cultural Affairs and renamed as National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra is in Wufeng Town. In 2002, the exclusive performing hall was inaugurated.
National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, with rich experiences, seeks excellence and stay update with time in addition to professional performance and training, has made concrete results and contribution to improvement of spiritual life of country people, promotion of art development and international cultural exchange. National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra is also the pioneer of large music festivals in Taiwan with famous operas performed in the past years including: La Traviata, Rogiletto, and Der Freischutz; large operas composed by the country people: the 100th Bride, Skylark of Tang-Shan, Xi Shi and dance drama Dream of Dun-Huang.
In the past six decades, numerous international teams and artists have been invited to perform with the Orchestra. Among which are some world-renowned Chinese stars: Fu Comg, Cheng Pihsien, Tan Dan, Warren Mok, and Nai-yuan Hu, etc. In international exchange, besides inviting domestic and overseas famous conductors such as Henry Mazer, Michael Rochat and Frederick Fennell, we also invited Russian State Ballet, Szeged Symphonic Orchestra, Hungary, and National Symphonic Orchestra, Romania to perform in Taiwan. Also, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform in the U.S., Europe, South Africa and Korea, etc. The Orchestra also was also dedicates to exchanges across the Strait to have art and academic interactions in Chinese Composer Seminars, Chinese Composition Competition and international art festivals, etc.
In the past years, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra strived for diverse art directions in search of ¡§delicacy¡¨ and ¡§popularity.¡¨ At the moment, we are working on making the place of the Orchestra into a cultural park for the youth. With systemized software and hardware, we aim to build the place into a place of symphonies of culture, education and rest in order to enhance the quality of all people on music esthetics and achieve the goal of a harmonious society.
